Investigation of Field Structure and Electron Behavior in the Near-Field of Hall Thrusters
نویسنده
چکیده
The formulation and preliminary results of a 3-D discrete electron transport simulation are presented. Assuming a magnetic and electric field distribution in the near-field of a Hall thruster, a leapfrog time-integrating method is utilized to track electrons launched from a simulated cathode to obtain statistics including estimates of the Hall parameter and anode/beam current ratios. It is shown that, disregarding collisions or instabilities in the near-field, the Hall parameter is on the order of two, and the anode/beam current is on the order of 0.1 to 0.2. The need for a complete mesh of potential data throughout the nearfield is highlighted. Results obtained with similar multi-step methods including the Adam’s Bashforth method and variations of the leapfrog method are also briefly mentioned.

Numerical Investigation of Electron Behavior in the Near-Field of Hall Thrusters
The formulation and results of a 3-D discrete electron transport simulation are presented for the near-field of a laboratory E x B Hall plasma thruster. For a prescribed magnetic and electric field distribution in the near-field of a Hall thruster, a staggered leapfrog timeintegrating method is utilized to track electrons launched from a simulated cathode. Currently, inter-particle collisions a...
متن کاملEvaluating the effects of near-field earthquakes on the behavior of moment resisting frames
Following the 1994 Northridge and 1995 Kobe earthquakes, most of modern structures damaged seriously or devastated totally despite the seismic codes of these countries that had been expected to bear advanced criteria for seismic design of structures. After extensive research, the most probable reason of those destructions was attributed to special specifications of near-field earthquakes. In th...
متن کاملParametric Investigation of the Rotating Spoke Instability in Hall Thrusters
This work presents recent results of ongoing investigations into rotating spoke instabilities in Hall thrusters. Recent work by the authors demonstrated large amounts of electron current carried by spokes in the nearanode region in the H6 6-kW laboratory model Hall thruster, and raises the question of whether spokes may play a larger role in electron transport throughout the Hall thruster plume...
متن کامل2 D simulations of Hall thrusters
Closed-Drift (Hall) thrusters constitute an important electric propulsion technology for certain applications requiring low thrust levels, e.g. satellite station keeping and orbit transfer (Gulczinski and Spores, 1996). The thrust in Hall thrusters is generated by ions being accelerated through an annular plasma by the electric field set up between an anode and a cathode. This electric field is...
متن کاملMultiscale Modeling of Hall Thrusters
Multiscale Modeling of Hall Thrusters Hall thrusters are efficient space propulsion devices that produce thrust by accelerating quasineutral plasma. The thruster consists of a channel with one end open to the ambient environment. The neutral propellant is injected at the closed end and is ionized by electrons produced by an externally mounted cathode. A radial magnetic field is applied across t...
